Meet Adrian Monk,
expert sleuth and obsessive compulsive. After the
murder of his wife, Monk lost a lot- his job as a
detective and nearly his sanity. Now, Monk works
as a consultant with the police department, but
his goal is to get back on the force full time.
With the help of his nurse/assistant Sharona,
Monk helps solve the crimes even the best
officers can't crack.

December 14, 2002:
Here is part of an
article I found at tvguide.com
Question:
I am greatly disturbed by the TV show Monk, about
the obsessive-compulsive detective. Being a
college student suffering from obsessive-compulsive
disorder myself, I don't see any humor in this
show or about obsessive-compulsive disorder
itself. It's a horrible disorder to suffer from
that greatly impairs life. It's one thing to put
something like this in a show to sort of "educate"
people, but it's supposed to be comedy! I think
the show is basically making fun of people with
obsessive-compulsive disorder! It bothers me that
TV is cashing in on people with problems! What do
you think? Do you agree or do you think I'm being
overly sensitive? Stephanie
Matt:
Thanks for writing. I sympathize with your
complaints, but the primary reason I take issue
with them is that I never feel that Tony
Shalhoub's performance as Adrian Monk lapses into
caricature. I think he deserves Golden Globe,
Emmy and other nominations in the awards season
ahead. There is quite evident pain in Monk's
inability to function, and even when his disorder
is being played for humor, the actor makes it
real and human. I think the show does manage to
shed some light on OCD without being a
politically correct lecture, and Adrian Monk is
one of the few original new characters from the
last year in TV. Also, consider that if
dramatists were to avoid portraying people of all
sorts in fear it would offend those who share a
character's specific traits, TV would be even
blander than it is now. That said, I have cringed
a couple of times watching Monk, thinking it
stooped for a cheap laugh at Monk's expense. I
would imagine the producer-writers realize
they're walking a pretty delicate tightrope here.
Again, thanks for the reality check.
