Mr. Bean To Beam Onto U.S. TV And Video
April 10, 2003
MR. BEAN, the eccentric character created by British writer/actor Rowan
Atkinson, is set for his U.S. animated television debut on American Public
Television (APT) in April 2003 and will launch on home video in fall 2003 via a
full-scale retail release by A&E Home Video. "We have quite a few stations who
have committed to airing this series," an APT spokesperson said. They expect
high carriage from this series especially since "adult animation is quite a hot
topic at the moment." APT has U.S. distribution rights from April 1, 2003
through March 30, 2004.
APT and A&E have also bought the live-action MR. BEAN series. Atkinson was
closely involved with the animated version of his character as well. "As a
live-action character, Mr. Bean always possessed a cartoon-like quality," said
Atkinson, who was filmed for every episode of the series so animators could use
his distinct movements when creating the animated MR. BEAN. Atkinson also
provided all of the voice-over for the character. Atkinson will premiere in his
new movie, JOHNNY ENGLISH, in summer 2003.
The animated MR. BEAN is produced by London-based Tiger Aspect Productions in
association with Richard Purdum Productions and Budapest-based Varga Holdings.
International handler Fremantle International Distribution sold it to more than
28 countries, including Super RTL (Germany), ABC (Australia), Disney (Asia), SVT
(Sweden), YLE (Finland), CYBC (Cyprus), CBC (Canada), Forte (Spain), RTE
(Ireland) and ATV (Hong Kong).

Mainframe Completes CGI Scary Godmother Special Using SOFTIMAGEXSI
April 07, 2003
Vancouver-based Mainframe Entertainment, Inc., a leading creator of computer
animation, has digitized the last pixel on it's first one-hour primetime
special, SCARY GODMOTHER HALLOWEEN SPOOKTAKULAR, scheduled to air on Canada's
YTV network this coming Halloween, October 31, 2003. Mainframe CEO, Rick
Mischel, said this is the first time an animation company has made a television
special using feature-film quality SOFTIMAGEXSI software. The show is based on
the popular comics and children's books by the award-winning artist and writer,
Jill Thompson, who also served as the art director. Zeke Norton directed the
whimsical animated story that follows the first trick-or-treating adventure of a
young girl, Hannah Marie. Her older, meaner cousin tries to frighten her that
night but the scheme backfires when Hannah's scary godmother and her quirky
monster friends come to her aide. Mischel said, "We're anticipating that this
special Halloween show will not only secure primetime pick-up in the States, but
will also migrate into a successful television or direct-to-video series."
Mainframe plans an extensive Halloween promotional push for the special with
tie-ins to Halloween retailers and candy makers.
Mainframe Entertainment has posted a 'sneak peek' trailer for SCARY GODMOTHER

Nick at Nite Picks Up Fatherhood As Network's First Original Animated Series
April 07, 2003
Nick at Nite will produce its first ever original animated series, FATHERHOOD.
David Alan Grier (LIFE WITH BONNIE, DAG) has been signed to star in the series,
which is based on Bill Cosby's bestselling book, FATHERHOOD. Cosby will
executive produce the primetime series for Nick at Nite along with Charles Kipps
(LITTLE BILL, COSBY MYSTERIES, LAW & ORDER) and David Brokaw (LITTLE BILL). Sal
Maniaci, VP, development & production, TV Land and Nick at Nite, is overseeing
the project, which is scheduled to premiere December 2003. "We are thrilled and
honored to join forces with America's most beloved and creative funnyman for the
network's first original project," said Jones. "We've been looking for an
original property much like THE COSBY SHOW, that truly fits the Nick at Nite
family viewing brand," according to by Larry W. Jones, EVP/GM, TV Land and Nick
at Nite. "What better way to launch our first original series than with an
original Cosby gem." This project marks the third installment of Cosby's
animation "trilogy" which includes LITTLE BILL for Nickelodeon, FAT ALBERT and
now FATHERHOOD for Nick at Nite. Each installment of the animated series will be
a comedic/insightful look at the challenges, life lessons and comical confusions
of family life. David Alan Grier will star as the voice of Dr. Bindlebeep, a
high school teacher, loving husband and father of three.
"I hope the audience will enjoy the art of New Yorker cartoonist George Booth
that inspired the look of these characters," said Cosby. Bill Cosby was
represented by William Morris Agency chairman Norman Brokaw and Mark Itkin, exec
VP. Nick at Nite, the evening and overnight programming arm of Nickelodeon,
offers new and timeless TV shows restored to their original graphic quality such
as THE COSBY SHOW, CHEERS, THREE'S COMPANY and ALL IN THE FAMILY.
Scooby Snack Airs On Cartoon Network in Primetime
March 28, 2003
WHAT'S NEW SCOOBY-DOO? takes to the airwaves on Cartoon Network March 28, 2003,
with a new batch of creature-related mysteries fashioned after the popular
animated series that debuted in 1969. The Hanna-Barbera creation was revamped by
Warner Bros. Animation last year, airing on Kids' WB! and now Cartoon Network at
8:00 pm. Original cast members Casey Kasem (Shaggy) and Frank Welker (Fred &
Scooby-Doo) are joined by Grey DeLisle (Daphne) and Mindy Cohn (Velma) as well
as special guest stars. Cartoon Network offers some fashion advisories to notice
this spring for Scooby and the gang in the new series.
Old Daphne
Daphne stayed true to ‘70s style with a chartreuse scarf, adding a hint of color
to her purple A-line dress. Her jaunty head band kept her hair neat and
stylish.
New Daphne
Daphne keeps up with the latest fashion trend with a wrap dress and platform
shoes that can take her from a day of mystery solving to a night of fun.
Old Fred
Fred’s conservative attitude carried through to a classic look: an orange ascot
and loafers complemented his white sweater and blue slacks.
New Fred
Fred, the leader of the group, updates his wardrobe with an open-collared shirt,
striped sweater and work boots, keeping up with the preppy but stylish fashion
trends.
Old Scooby
Scooby-Doo’s teal and yellow collar augmented his bright, shiny coat.
New Scooby-Doo
Why change a classic?
Old Shaggy
Shaggy was constantly on-the-go, trying to solve mysteries and satisfy his
appetite. He did not have time for fashion, so opted for a relaxed, low
maintenance look. The burgundy and lime green color combination is one that few
fashionistas can pull off.
New Shaggy
Shaggy sticks with a casual look but adds stylish, contemporary shoes and cuffed
pants, making him ready for any adventure that comes his way.
Old Velma
Brainy Velma lacked style, with a "helmet head" hairstyle, a bulky mustard
yellow sweater, matching knee high socks and a pleated skirt that covered her
curves.
New Velma
Velma remains the brains but still knows how to stay in-style and true to
herself. Her slimming turtleneck sweater, skort, and platform shoes (along with
a sassy new ‘do), update her look. Daphne better watch out- she’s not the only
babe of the group!

VTV:Varsity Television, the recently launched 24-hour network exclusively
dedicated to teenagers, has announced its spring 2003 programming lineup. VTV

is compelling and relevant to today's teens. The VTV animation highlights
include LARRY LABRAT, a 3D animated show set inside a commercial scientific
research facility, and AGRIPPINE, a series that follows 16 year-old "teen queen"
Agrippine as she copes with the trials and tribulations of teen life. LARRY

Noodlesoup Show Ventures Out On Cartoon Network.
February 14, 2003
THE VENTURE BROS., a new animated special from Noodlesoup Productions, premieres
Sunday, February 16 at 11:30 pm on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block. It's a
spoof of the old-fashioned JONNY QUEST cartoons from the mid-sixties, as well as
THE HARDY BOYS and TOM SWIFT boys' adventure novels of the past. With elements
of spy and science fiction, the Venture brothers -- Hank and Dean Venture --
travel with their father, renowned scientist Doctor Venture, to New York for the
unveiling of a fantastic new invention at the United Nations. Unbeknownst to
them, the Ventures are being pursued by not one but two villains, the deranged
Otaku Senzuri, an Asian businessman with a suspicious curiosity about the new
invention, and The Monarch, a winged villain with a longstanding grudge against
Dr. Venture. The Big Apple presents other new experiences for the dimwitted
Venture boys, who end up being robbed and lost on the subway before falling into
the arms of a New York "working girl." Lucky for them, Dr. Venture's brawny
bodyguard Brock Samson is hell-bent on defending his charges -- with extreme
violence if necessary. Noodlesoup was founded in New York by Jeff Nodelman two
years ago. In addition to commercials, and gaming animation, the studio produces
the Warner Bros. Online series GOTHAM GIRLS, using its own proprietary animation
system.
Cartoon Network Adds 2 CGI Series Weekday Mornings
April 11, 2003
Cartoon Network is adding 3D animated series, SITTING DUCKS and PECOLA, to air
weekday mornings, starting April 21, 2003. "PECOLA and SITTING DUCKS are both
whimsical and sweet series that feature popular CGI animation. We think they'll
be perfect additions to our weekday morning line-up," said Jim Samples, gm/vp of
Cartoon Network.
SITTING DUCKS is inspired by Michael Bedard's internationally known series of
airbrushed paintings, posters and books. It follows the adventures of Bill, a
duck, and Aldo, an alligator. Bill's neighbors in idyllic Ducktown, Ed, Oly and
Waddle, often drag the mismatched duo into wacky, and sometimes dangerous
adventures. Aldo shows remarkable restraint and patience with his feathered
friends, but other gators, who reside in neighboring Swampwood, are more
interested in ducks as snacks than as pals. This series was created using CGI
technology by Creative Capers and Krislin Studios for Sitting Duck Productions
and Universal Pictures Visual Programming.
PECOLA is the third production from Nelvana's state-of-the-art 3D facility in
Toronto about a cube-headed penguin living in colorful Cube Town, a tiny,
perfect place where everything is square – the buildings, the parks, even the
residents. The only thing slightly off-kilter is Pecola, a curious and eager
little penguin. Whether he's trying to help the local mail carrier win a big
award or generating some excitement for Cube City's fire department, Pecola is
always in the middle of the action. Nelvana produced PECOLA with Japan's Milky
Cartoon and Yomiko Advertising in association with TELETOON, Canada. Both series
premiered in Canada. Cartoon Network's Website is located at CartoonNetwork.com.
YTV Orders TV Series Based On Stephen King's Creepshow
April 07, 2003
Vancouver-based animation company SecondSun Entertainment and Minds Eye
Entertainment, will produce CREEPSHOW, a new half-hour animated series in
development with YTV for an older 12-17 audience. "It will be a suspense
thriller series with all kinds of bizarre characters and unique plot twists and
turns to keep kids on the edge of their seats," series producer Chris Delaney.
"We are confident that the series’ edgy and stylish content will appeal to
teenage viewers in Canada and around the world," Minds Eye Entertainment’s
executive producer Kevin DeWalt. SecondSun designer John Delaney (BATMAN,
SUPERMAN, FUTURAMA) has created a stylish, hybrid look for the series that
combines an anime style with North American design sensibilities. Delaney
(CHRISTOPHER THE CHRISTMAS TREE, THE LITTLEST ANGEL) is developing the creative
concept with consultants Ivan Cohen and Barney Cohen (FOREVER NIGHT, SABRINA THE
TEENAGE WITCH). A teen character in each episode will encounter a seemingly
normal, everyday situation that quickly turns into a variety of terrifying,
suspense filled situations. It may be that a babysitter is attacked by 'monster'
children or a robot comes to life and does battle with its owner. Aaron L.
Gilbert brought the parties together who will executive produce the series with
DeWalt. CREEPSHOW is licensed from Jim Dudleson's Taurus Entertainment (NIGHT OF
THE LIVING DEAD). Minds Eye International, a division of Minds Eye
Entertainment, will distribute the series worldwide. Production is expected to
begin in Vancouver in the fall of 2003. Established in 1986, Minds Eye
Entertainment (formerly Minds Eye Pictures) is a fully integrated production,
post-production and distribution entity with offices across western Canada.
Check out the company's Website at www.mindseyepictures.com. SecondSun
Entertainment (secondsunentertainment.com) is a "transmedia" company
specializing in the creation of animation based content for various media
platforms, formed in May 2002 by the amalgamation of Brainchild Studios Inc. a
3D company, its interactive game division Furious Entertainment, and Delaney &
Friends Cartoon Productions Ltd., a 2D animation company.
The New TNN Spikes Its Name
April 16, 2003
Third time's a charm? The Nashville Network started in 1983, was renamed the New
TNN when it was bought by Viacom in 2000 and will now be called Spike TV, as of
June 16, 2003, reflecting its new brand positioning as the first network for
men. The network's new logo will be unveiled at the MTV Networks upfront
presentation in New York City on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, according to network
president Albie Hecht. "Spike TV captures the attributes and essence of what we
want the first network for men to be," said Hecht. "It's unapologetically male;
it's active; it's smart and contemporary with a personality that's aggressive
and irreverent. It's a name we feel our audience will get and make a connection
with. I like Spike! This is a first major step in our journey to super-serving
men in a way no one has done before."
Spike TV will be serving up an adult animation block of programs to debut in
June 2003 with new original episodes of REN & STIMPY, Stan Lee's STRIPERELLA,
starring Pamela Anderson, and GARY THE RAT, starring Kelsey Grammer.
Herb Scannell, president of Nickelodeon/TV Land/Spike TV, added, "When we
decided use our near 65% male audience skew and become the first network for
men, we knew we needed a name that was a strong statement of what this brand
will be. Spike TV is going to be a great addition to our portfolio of channels
and will laser in on its target male demo and serve them the way Nickelodeon
serves kids and TV Land serves classic TV lovers."
The re-naming of the channel will be supported by a multi-million dollar
awareness campaign. For programming listing guides, Spike TV will utilize the
abbreviation SPIKE. Spike TV, the first network for men, is available in 86
million homes in North America and is a division of MTV Networks.

has been completely recreated in clay in-house by the production/scenic staff,
including models of guests Johnny Knoxville (JACKASS), comedian Richard Lewis
and musical guest David Bowie. The show also features O'Brien's recurring look

Daphne better watch out- she’s not the only
babe of the group!

include LARRY LABRAT, a 3D animated show set inside a commercial scientific
research facility, and AGRIPPINE, a series that follows 16 year-old "teen queen"

"Spike TV captures the attributes and essence of what we
want the first network for men to be," said Hecht. "It's unapologetically male;
it's active; it's smart and contemporary with a personality that's aggressive
and irreverent.
