actually..the koran hasnt remained word for word...and the bible is backed up by more ...whats the word (i just woke up) sources? umm wait. no. manuscripts. there are thousands. you cant say that about the koran. as for one of the fastest growing...i would say that fundamentalist islam is growing. fact is- much of asia and the middle east...christianity is outlawed (no other religion is tolerated), so of course one is going to turn to islam. i said ctazy visions, because..come on...thats pretty much all the religion is based upon. theres no hard evidence to point to, just some visions one mad had (like mormonism!) christianity is rooted in the resurrection of christ which holds a lot of weight in the truth dept. having a few visions or rising from the dead- id go with rising from the dead in front of hundreds! and the thing about christian scholars admitting contradictions and such. thats far from true. most any 'scholar' you talk to will set those 'supposed' contradictions straight...ive done a lot of research on that subject.
now, im not trying to be disrespectful- but i dont think im oversimplifying at all. ive heard the evidence that is behind both religions, and from my studies, the evidence behind islam is flimsy at best. i mean, islam basically teaches that jesus was a prophet of god just like muhammed...yet, muhammed was the final prophet. they attribute most of what christ said to him (from the bible)...he clearly stated he was the only way to god, yet mohammed comes around and says the same thing (tho he neglected to show the impressive amt of evidence christ did)...so, both men are telling the truth, yet both men say THEY are the only way. there is no logic there to me. mohammed claimed to be simply a messenger of god, yet christ- he claimed to be god himself. its just totally different. anyhow. im shutting up. bottom line is...from the mountain of evidence, i have chosen christianty. jesus has called all of us to make sure that nonbelievers are saved from their ultimate fate. if your religion tells you that all people who dont believe in christ will burn in hell, i think thats a very good reason to spread the word as far as you can and as much as you can! i sure as heck dont want anyone to suffer! well...maybe the people on american idol, but thats a different story. okay. why can i not shut up when i start typing?
Posted by: Joshua Taj Bozeman at April 16, 2003 03:50 AMJosh...if you're going to 'spread the gospel' at least try to keep an open mind. Like I said before, it all comes down to faith...and it just seems incredibly disrespectful to oversimplify one of the fastest growing religions on earth. As for 'crazy' visions and whatnot...please be reminded that there are different versions of the Bible whereas the Koran has remained intact WORD FOR WORD for centuries. Who's to say the Bible has all the answers --? Even Christian scholars admit that there so many discrepancies and contradictions within the Bible whereas the Koran does follow a much logical order, whether you choose to follow it or not.
Gaaah. This was not supposed to turn into a religious rant....damnit ... lol
Posted by: Haley at April 15, 2003 09:49 PMas a christian, its your job to save unbelievers from their fate (hell according to the bible!) by spreading the gospel. so, i think its a pretty good reason to 'push' your religion on others. as for the koran being backed up with evidence. most of islam is based upon a number of crazy visions mohammed had. muslims suddenly decided jerusalem was the third holy city based on his vision with the horse. oh, and part of his 'proof' was his hairy birthmark! well...thats simplifying it, but in a way it's true. anyhow. everyone believes what they want to believe...so, you try to open people up to new ideas (christianity for example) and give them the details and the underlying evidence to support the claims of christ and his followers. nothing wrong with that, i dont think.

Posted by: Joshua Taj Bozeman at April 15, 2003 01:16 AM...Hmmm...I don't know about the Koran not being backed up...perhaps you should research that a bit more. I really don't want to get into a religious debate here, but I'm Muslim, and I know one thing for sure...we choose to belong to a certain faith and when it coems right down to it, we all believe in God Almighty, whether we follow Jesus or Mohommad *pbuh* or whomever it may be...so is there really any reason for one religion to try to and push themselves onto another?

Graham's Charity "Disruptive?"
You know...there are some really good articles in Slate most of the time. This isn't one of them. I'm confused as to how this article is so biased against Graham and the whole notion of missionary work. It's the job of Christians (according to the Bible) to spread the word of Jesus, and try to convert all the people we can. I mean, the Bible (unlike the Koran) is backed up by an impressive amount of evidence. The resurrection of Christ is also backed up by considerable evidence. This tells us which religion is closer to fact (in my opinion, and many others as well.) So, what's wrong with trying to convert people? Franklin Graham's main goal is humanitarian work...he has done a lot of it, and he's done it very well. The writer of this article calls the notion of his charity going into Iraq "disruptive." That's just silly.
