A lot of people in NYC hated the design of the world trade center towers when the design was announced and models were shown. Even after being built, many complained that the buildings were ugly...plain box shapes with no character. I never thought there was anything exciting about them either- I always loved picture of the area of NYC, because I love skyscrapers in general...and big cities with lots of tall buildings were always cool to me. But, the more I look at pictures of the towers, the more I love them. The simple design is elegant, the plain shape is powerful in a way- seeing the models Donald Trump showed off at his press conference, they were really the same buildings on 1 story taller. They're actually really beautiful buildings.
I agree that the design they chose is terrible. It's so out of place in NYC or ANY major city. The design of the Freedom Towers looks as tho it belongs in a metropolitan area of Oz (the wizard, that is.) Not to mention, I'm sickened by the lack of leadership in NYC on rebuilding the towers. It's been 4 years, and there's still nothing there but a big hole in the ground, a graveyard of sorts. The terrorists had one victory in the sense that nothing is even being started to be built at the site, and that's just an indictment of the terrible political wrangling taking place over the area. I like Trump's idea, minus the fact that- I think they should stick to the same design, but build them to be the tallest buildings in the world- or maybe even stick to the symbolic height of 1776 feet. Other than the issue of height, I think this idea is the best out of them all.
I agree. That 16 acres of Manhattan real estate is a gold mine. It should be utilized as it was before, not turned into some giant memorial. The memory of the people should be honored, of course, but giving up that much land in the crown jewel of American Capitalism, is insane.
I'm not a New Yorker, nor have I ever been there, so it certainly isn't my place to dictate to them how to do things in their town. But since no one up there seems to be doing a damned thing, as you said, after four years, I think someone should step up and take charge. I think The Donald is right on the money (pun intended) in his suggestion.
from the plan that trump is supporting...the footprints of the old towers will be kept where they are, and the new towers will be placed on 2 new footprints. not sure what sort of memorial will be there, but i assume its something.
also, im not reallysure what the deal is, but ive read that there is a lot of bickering over what to build there and how to do it, all sorts of things...which is why i said these people need to get it together. 4 yrs. thats a long time...the plan trump supports, the bldgs skeleton and external construction could be completed in 2 yrs- which means, the bldgs could be nearly finished inside AND out. that would have been a blow to terrorists worldwide- attack us, but we will rebuild and we will go on.
now, the new security features with this design is good, but we need to work to make airliners an impossible means of hitting anything.

i posted about this on sep 12 , 2001- they have the technology to actually land a plane by computer or pilot controls from OUTSIDE the plane (as in, on the ground in air traffic control or whatever.) they need to mandate a system where hijacking is impossible, not due to cockpit doors (too risky to have ur fate riding on mere doors), but computers and technology that makes it impossible to disable the planes signature in the sky (the transpoder iguess it is?), technology that would take control of the plane if anything happens- first sign of hijacking, plane goes into hijack mode, all control take away from pilot and it stays that way until he or she can prove there is no hijacking or any threat of any kind...operators on the ground would program the comopyuters to have the plane land as soon as possible and as safe as possible. from all i read, the technology exists and that would mean 1 thing- new towers wouldnt be exposed to ANY threat from airliners.
Well, The planes could be outfitted with complete electronic maps detailing no-fly zones the plane's software will refuse to fly into. If the pilots deliberately fly into such zones the plane takes over and lands at the nearest designated airport indicated on its GPS maps. This way you have no remote controlling with codes that could be hacked into by terrorists.
New maps are downloaded at maintenance. Terrorists will probably try to download their own versions into the plane to set the flight-path through a building.
Any such attempts at overriding the current maps should prompt the plane to take over and carry out an emergency landing and warn personnel at the ground to take appropriate measures.
NYC is a wonderful city. It is vibrant and sets the pace for cities around the world. The twin towers need to be rebuilt. The current ideas for the site are totally out of place for NYC.
