Newspaper Guild Chief: US Targeting Journalists in Iraq

(254 Words) Posted at May 19, 2005 07:14 PM in Current Events .

Newspaper Guild chief a raving madwoman

NEW YORK Linda Foley, national president of The Newspaper Guild, drew strong criticism today from some conservative groups for comments she made last Friday about the killing of journalists in Iraq. Foley said, among other things, that she was angry that there was "not more outrage about the number and the brutality, and the cavalier nature of the U.S. military toward the killing of journalists in Iraq. I think it's just a scandal."

She accuses the US government of targeting and killing journalists in Iraq. Amazing.

"Journalists are not just being targeted verbally or politically. They are also being targeted for real in places like Iraq. And what outrages me as a representative of journalists is that there's not more outrage about the number and the brutality, and the cavalier nature of the U.S. military toward the killing of journalists in Iraq. I think it's just a scandal."

"It's not just U.S. journalists either, by the way. They target and kill journalists from other countries, particularly Arab countries, at news services like Al Jazeera, for example. They actually target them and blow up their studios, with impunity. This is all part of the culture that it is OK to blame the individual journalists, and it just takes the heat off of these media conglomerates that are part of the problem."

UPDATE: I've written a more detailed post on Foley, The Guild, and even threw in some Helen Thomas nonsense for good measure. Check it out when you can.

'raving madwoman'

Thats too complementary for her. She must be fairly dumb as well to have said it to a bunch of reporters.

well, id have to agree shes pretty dumb. these journalists who hate the military, often times hate the country, and worse...theyre act is tired and worn out. im sick of seeing these attacks by people who are so clueless they wouldnt be able to report the news accurately if the events actually took place right in front of their faces.

so many out there say there is no liberal bias in the media (and theres no anti-american/anti-military slant either), but all of these various events by journalists prove otherwise.

remarks such as those she made are inherently anti-military and anti-american, but these people wont change. americans will soon wise up in larger numbers than they already have and these so-called journalists will die out. it wont be a sad day at all in my eyes.

Okay, you guys? I'm actually sympathetic to your argument, I really am. i'm not so sure the military has been targeting any journalists at all. But were I interested in posting that on my blog, I would do a bit of research, see how many journalists have actually been killed in Iraq, etc. Think how much more impressive it would be to actually prove a point, rather than just saying "amazing" and moving on. Sarcasm, while fun, conveys no real info.
