I haven't been closely following the nomination of John Bolton as ambassador to the UN, but I watched the coverage of the senate hearings with Bolton, and I have to say- as usual, the democrats are clueless. They attacked Bolton for not having too much faith in the UN. We know the left adores and almost worships this meaningless body, but that doesn't make the body effective.
Barbara Boxer, who as you will recall cried when Bush was certified the winner of Ohio, attacked Bolton for imaginary statements he never made. PBS's Ray Suarez fell into Boxer's trap by claiming that Boxer played a tape where Bolton said exactly what Boxer claims he said. She said that Bolton had once said the UN doesn't even exist. PBS' Newshour backed this up, then showed the bit of video Boxer played, which proved both Boxer and PBS wrong.
Bolton was speaking to the world federalists who support a one world government, something Bolton doesn't support at all. He said that the UNITED Nations doesn't exist as a body overall...it's merely a connection of member states that sometimes decide together to do something (I will try to find his exact quote, because I can't word it right), anyhow...Bolton was making the clear point that the United Nations isn't really at all united- which is a fact. No world body that is comprised of communist regimes, despots, and free nations like the US all together can ever truly be called united in any way, shape, or form. That's all Bolton was saying...he was simply stating a known fact, and Boxer wanted to twist his words into something completely different. PBS, as I mentioned, helped Boxer out with this canard.
I will take a second to remember history in regards to the UN- the security council members ony have a veto because the prolific mass murderer/communist dictator Stalin demanded a veto power so that the UN would neve truly be a democratic body. The United States had to appease Stalin for him to even join the organization. My point with this sidebar is- the UN is dysfunctional at its core. The very power the left loves to praise today was only started to appease a murderous communist ruler who was responsible for the deaths of nearly 100 million innocent people! Any body that has that as part of its history cannot be taken TOO seriously, which is why all Americans should welcome a man like Bolton, who will surely do everything he can to challenge the charades that take place in the body itself. We know John Kerry and all of his pals think America has to meet a "global test," but all thinking Americans know that that's nonsense, and the UN is the last body we need to be tested by.
Back to the hearings themselves...
Christopher Dodd made a complete ass of himself by attacking Bolton and getting loud, demanding that Bolton answer the question that he JUST answered. Dodd and those like him make Congress look terrible overall. Shouting at a nominee is uncalled for, and it only makes you look like an idiot.
It seems a pattern of the left lately to take actions that do nothing but hold the US back...they want more power given to the UN, they want war plans to be endlessly debated over (a recent phenomena that has totally destroyed the vital art of surprise in regards to military action), they seem to want to blame America as the cause of much of the world's problems. It gets quite tiring quite fast. The attacks on Bolton are just another example of this perverted mindset.
